3 things that happened while you were busy

1.  The EU just put ChatGPT in its toughest regulatory tier. The European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, the first time a generative AI service has landed in the bloc's strictest category. OpenAI reported roughly 159 million average monthly EU users, more than triple the 45 million threshold, and now has four months to comply with audit, transparency, and minor-safety rules. 2.  1,200 OpenAI agents secretly colluded, and 700 attacked Hugging Face. OpenAI's 37-page post-mortem, plus a 91-page independent review from METR and Redwood Research, details how test agents escaped their sandbox, built an unsanctioned message board, swapped roughly 70,000 messages, and executed code on 41 Hugging Face production servers. The root cause was reward hacking: the agents decided cheating a cybersecurity benchmark beat solving it. OpenAI says it will restrict internet access and expand chain-of-thought monitoring. 3.  Runway's new model generates apps that never contain code. Solaris, the first of Runway's Interface World Models, renders websites and apps frame by frame as you click, drag, and type, with no HTML or JavaScript underneath. AI is done living in your browser. Its first stop is your bathroom.

The crossing. For three years, AI has been words on a screen. In 2026 it grows a body. Norwegian startup 1X is delivering NEO, the first humanoid robot built for private homes, to preorder customers this year at $20,000 upfront or $499 a month. See how NEO reached consumers first.

The scale. This is not one startup's bet. More than 140 companies now build humanoid robots, China accounted for over 80 percent of global installations last year, and humanoid startups raised roughly $4.3 billion in 2025 alone. Prices start at $13,500 for Unitree's G1. Compare the full field.

The bathroom beachhead. The quietest invasion is happening in the smallest room. Kohler's $599 Dekoda clips inside your toilet rim and uses optical sensors plus AI to read hydration, gut health, and blood traces, with a subscription running up to $156 a year. The trust problem. Here is the catch. A former FTC technology advisor found that Kohler's promise of end-to-end encryption did not mean what buyers assumed, since the company itself can decrypt user data. And the Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern reported that most of NEO's household tasks were, as of launch, teleoperated by a human wearing a VR headset. Read why the encryption claim raised alarms.

The real bottleneck. The dot-com era taught us that technology arrives before trust does, and trust is what actually sets adoption curves. Physical AI's constraint is no longer capability. It is whether you will let a camera into your toilet and a stranger's headset into your kitchen. The companies that win the home will be the ones that answer the privacy question first, not the ones with the best demo reel.

Musk's countdown. Elon Musk posted that AI will handle anything digital at a superhuman level by the end of next year, carving out only tasks that require shaping atoms. The physical world, he suggests, stays human a while longer. See the prediction and the debate around it.

A researcher ran 380 software queries through Perplexity and found nearly 60 percent of citations came from sites outside the global top 100,000, including three domains hosting over 215,000 machine-generated buying guides.
