3 things that happened while you were busy

1.  Tesla puts its first Cybercabs into paid service, and keeps the cameras off. On September 3, Tesla began invitation-only paid rides in Austin in the gold two-seat Cybercab, a car with no steering wheel and no pedals. Texas DMV records show just 45 Cybercabs authorized for driverless use statewide, so this is a soft launch dressed as a moment. The company held a closed-door event with no livestream and, by most accounts, no Elon Musk, which left some fans grumbling on X. See what the car can and cannot do yet.

2.  Federal regulators opened an investigation within hours. The NHTSA launched an audit query on September 4 to examine the data Tesla used to self-certify a car that lacks controls federal rules still require. Administrator Jonathan Morrison said the agency supports autonomous vehicles but has to make sure the law is followed. The precedent is Zoox, which self-certified its pedal-free pod in 2022 and only cleared its last federal hurdle in July 2026, with a cap of 2,500 vehicles a year. Read the full story on the probe.

3.  Waymo answers with three new cities in one morning. Waymo opened Denver, San Diego and Tampa to public riders on September 1, taking its network to 14 US cities and more than 4,000 vehicles. Denver and San Diego get only the new Zeekr-built Ojai minivan, the cheaper sixth-generation vehicle Waymo is counting on to reach profitability. Tampa is also a Tesla market, so the two companies are now competing for the same riders on the same streets.

Bonus reads:  Tesla wants other people to own the cars. It posted a robotaxi interest form asking businesses about fleet purchases and mobility hubs, plus Nevada regulators have cleared Tesla, Uber and Waymo to run thousands of robotaxis around Las Vegas over the next year.

The camera-only bet is finally on public roads. The fight is not about cameras.

The setup. For a decade the robotaxi argument has been a lab debate. Waymo bolts cameras, lidar and radar onto cars other companies build. Tesla builds its own car and insists a few cameras plus a big neural network are enough, with Musk famously calling lidar a crutch. As of this week both approaches are carrying paying passengers in the same city.

The opening shot. Waymo did not wait for launch day. A week early, software VP Srikanth Thirumalai published a post arguing that after 200 million real-world miles the data shows cameras alone are not enough, and that pure end-to-end systems that map pixels straight to steering risk black-box failures. He told Axios that even trillion-parameter models still hallucinate, and there is no reboot button in physical AI. Waymo never said the word Tesla. Nobody needed it to.

The counterpunch. Tesla bull Pierre Ferragu of New Street Research dismissed the argument as incumbent rhetoric, comparing Waymo to a gas plant made irrelevant by AI at scale. Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher fired back with a John Wick meme. The whole exchange took place on X over Labor Day weekend, which tells you how much money is riding on the outcome.

The scoreboard. Right now it is not close. Waymo runs roughly 4,000 vehicles across 14 cities and books about 500,000 paid trips a week, according to TechCrunch. Tesla has 45 authorized Cybercabs and a few hundred Model Ys, and only pulled safety monitors from most of them in the last few weeks. But Tesla's own Q2 investor update targets more than 125,000 Cybercabs a year, and the car reportedly costs under $30,000 to build.

The real fight. Sensors are the surface argument. Underneath it is cost and regulation. Waymo pays for its Chinese-made Ojai, pays import duties, then adds an expensive sensor suite, while Tesla makes the whole thing in Texas. That is why Tesla can even talk about a $400 billion market on price. The catch is that NHTSA is now doing to Tesla what it did to Zoox, and Zoox needed three years and a hard annual cap to get through. If the camera bet works, Tesla wins on cost. If the regulators move slowly, Waymo wins on time. Both companies know which one they control.

The John Wick meme. Waymo's spokesperson answering Tesla analysts with a still of Keanu Reeves staring down a dozen guns is the closest a corporate comms team has come to trash talk this year.

Innovator's dilemma 101. Pierre Ferragu's thread calling Waymo a gas plant became the rallying cry for the Tesla side of the argument. Read it, then read the Waymo post, and decide which one ages better.

Fleet owner, anyone? Tesla's robotaxi interest form lets businesses raise a hand for Cybercab fleet purchasing, mobility hubs or event collaboration. TechCrunch notes it echoes Musk's 2019 promise that owners would earn money renting out their cars, a promise that never shipped.

No livestream, no Musk. Forbes' account of launch night captures fans refreshing X for a stream that never came, then discovering the rides were real anyway. Tesla named no next city, no price and no expansion date.

Vegas is already paid. Zoox quietly started charging for rides in Las Vegas after clearing its federal exemption, making it the first pedal-free robotaxi to take your money. Tesla is now trying to skip the paperwork Zoox spent years on.

Robot dogs, banned. Worth remembering as humanoid hype builds: the FCC blocked new imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots in July, citing cybersecurity. China ships roughly 85 percent of the world's humanoids, so the US market just got a lot smaller for them.
