3 robots that arrived while you were busy

1.  Half horse, half worker: the centaur robot debuts in Shanghai.

Shanghai-based Run Robotics unveiled what it calls the world's first centaur wheel-leg hybrid robot at the World AI Conference, pairing wheels for speed with legs for rough terrain. The specs are the story: it carries 100 to 120 kg routinely with a 210 kg maximum, swaps upper-body modules including dual arms and dexterous hands, and navigates using lidar, binocular vision, and depth cameras. Target jobs: industrial inspection, firefighting, and rescue, the places you would rather not send a person. Over 95% of its core components are made in China.

2.  The transformer robot that went viral in China.

A week earlier, Qiyuan Robotics launched the Qiyuan T1, billed as the first transformable personal robot: it stands upright as a wheel-legged humanoid for tasks, then crouches into a quadruped dog form to travel. The launch lit up Chinese social platforms, partly because the founder is Peng Zhihui, the celebrated engineer behind humanoid maker Agibot, effectively competing with his own creation.

3.  The money is arriving as fast as the machines.

The robot economy's financial layer is forming in real time: Agility Robotics filed a $2.5B SPAC, Unitree cleared its Shanghai IPO, and Tesla is converting a Model S line into an Optimus factory. Meanwhile Japan assembled its own answer, the Noetra consortium of SoftBank, Sony, NEC, and Honda, putting up to $6.1B over five years into physical AI. Robots now have ticker symbols, national teams, and factory lines.

The showcase.  This year's WAIC in Shanghai was less a conference and more a coming-out party for physical AI: over 1,000 companies, 3,000-plus exhibits, and 349 global product debuts, with the centaur robot named by state broadcaster CCTV among the ten standout exhibits. The signal from Beijing could not be clearer about which industry comes next.

The numbers.  China's industry ministry says Chinese companies have developed more than 400 humanoid robot models, over half the global total, while domestically built quadruped robots account for nearly 70% of worldwide sales. Whatever you think of individual demos, the manufacturing base underneath them is not a demo.

The form-factor fight.  Here is the quietly interesting debate: the winning robots may not look human at all. The centaur, the transformable T1, and Italy's earlier CENTAURO research robot all bet that shape should follow the job, human hands on top, wheels or four legs below. Humanoids make great headlines because factories and homes are built for human bodies, but the first robots to earn real paychecks may be the weird-looking ones.

The launch video.  Run Robotics' official reveal, tagline: built to go where humans cannot, from steel mills to nuclear zones, is doing numbers on YouTube and makes the centaur concept click in 60 seconds. Worth the watch.

Actually, about that "first".  Robot nerds were quick to point out that Italy's Institute of Technology built CENTAURO, a humanoid torso on a wheeled quadruped base, years ago as a research platform. Run Robotics' claim rests on being the first commercial product in the shape. The pedants have a point, and we respect pedants.

The family feud.  The T1's maker shares a founding team with humanoid star Agibot, and Chinese tech media is treating the two as rival apprentices from the same master. Robotics now has sibling drama, which means robotics has officially arrived.

WAIC's other 200 reveals.  Beyond the centaur, the conference logged 201 newly unveiled technologies across models, chips, and machines. If a robotics product got announced this month, odds are it happened on that show floor.
